Breast Imaging Fellowships

Breast MRI

The Medical University of South Carolina is pleased to offer a fellowship positions in Breast Imaging. The Hollings Cancer Center Breast Imaging Division is a comprehensive program composed of screening mammography, diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MR imaging and all interventional breast imaging procedures including MR-guided breast biopsy. There are five MUSC breast imaging faculty, three of whom also share time in the Ultrasound Division of the department and one who shares time in the Musculoskeletal Division. The faculty are actively involved in national meetings (ARRS and RSNA) and are members of the Society of Breast Imaging and one of our Radiology faculty serves as the Editor of the Newsletter for the Society of Breast Imaging. The fellowship is primarily centered on Breast Imaging but there is flexibility in the program to allow for some exposure to other aspects of Women's Imaging such as pelvic ultrasound and pelvic MR imaging.

There is ample clinical work to expose the fellow to the entire gamut of breast imaging.  In 2007 we performed 10,500 screening mammograms, 4,635 diagnostic mammograms,   2,082 breast ultrasound examinations, 400 breast MR examinations, 136 needle localization procedures, 142 cyst aspirations, 73 stereotactic biopsy procedures, and 454 ultrasound-guided biopsies. We expect an approximate 10-15% growth yearly. The fellow participates in all aspects of the division and is expected to help teach medical students and residents and to coordinate the monthly Breast Imaging Pathology conference. This imaging/pathology correlation conference is a tremendous learning experience for the pathology and radiology residents. There also is a weekly Hollings Cancer Center multidisciplinary breast tumor board in which all of the newly diagnosed breast cancer cases are reviewed. The Breast Imaging Division plays an important and integral role in this conference and this is another one of the fellows responsibilities. The fellow is also encouraged to participate in all types of surgical procedures with our outstanding breast surgeons, Drs. Megan Baker, David Cole and Virginia Hermann.

The fellow is expected to be involved in the ongoing research projects of the division and to publish at least one article in a refereed journal during the year. The research endeavors are closely monitored by the attending staff who serve as mentors for these responsibilities. For these efforts, the fellow is given academic time during the year.

If you have questions about the fellowship or to submit an application, contact Ginger Raulinaitis at 843-792-4637 or raulina@musc.edu.
