The Musculoskeletal division is responsible for radiographs, CT, musculoskeletal MR and related procedures such as arthrography, joint aspirations and injections, and percutaneous biopsies. Interventional procedures are presently being developed and plans are underway to incorporate musculoskeletal ultrasound into the diagnostic armamentarioum. The Department of Radiology has state of the art imaging equipment including five multi-slice helical CT scanners and four MR magnets (three 1.5 T and one 3 T). Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry is interpreted by our Nuclear Medicine section and the fellow has access to learning about this diagnostic technique.
Five Radiology faculty members make up the Musculoskeletal section. The Musculoskeletal fellow is actively involved in clinical care, medical student teaching and academic research. The fellow also has the opportunity to attend at least one national meeting. The Musculoskeletal section works closely with the Departments of Orthopaedics and Rheumatology. This relationship is manifested by several cooperative ongoing research projects, weekly and monthly Rheumatology and Orthopaedic conferences, monthly Trauma conference and monthly MR/arthroscopic correlation conference. MUSC's emergency room is a Level I trauma center and orthopaedic trauma occupies a fair portion of the clinical practice. Other high volume areas are prosthetic replacements, and hand and foot surgery.
