Cardiac Rotation

Dr. Joseph Shoepf

A relatively new clinical rotation, the Cardiac rotation addresses the increasing focus on Cardiovascular imaging in radiology. The resident has a variety of experiences and is involved with Nuclear cardiology, Cardiac MR, and most recently Cardiac CT.

With the acquisition of two 64-detector CT scanners and a dual-source CT we are now performing 6-8 cardiovascular related studies per day. These include direct gated imaging of the coronary arteries with extensive 3-D and MPR reformating, as well as post-operative follow up of venous coronary artery grafts, and post-ablation pulmonary vein assesment. This is a growing service with the increasing participation of Cardiothoracic surgery and Cardiology services

Drs. Bayne Selby and Joe Schoepf are the primary staff for this rotation and are heavily involved in the development of CT cardiac imaging. Dr. Ken Spicer staffs the cardiac MR portion and Dr. Denise Mulvihill staffs pediatric CT and MR particularly congenital heart disease.

We are among a handful of academic centers performing cardiac-gated chest CT in our emergency room as a means to screen for Pulmonary Embolism, Coronary Artery Disease, and Aortic Dissection with an ECG-gated 64-slice chest CT scanner.  This modality promises to be an integral tool of the future.
