Another one of the core rotations through which all first years will rotate, fluoroscopy is a rotation where you will first begin to get hands-on experience performing contrast studies. Just when you thought that all of your doctor-patient skills learned in medical school would go to waste, here’s your chance to show them off… This rotation involves learning the basics of "slinging barium", a phrase that is often not far off when first beginning to perform these exams. You will learn basic radiologic studies like the esophagram, upper GI, small bowel follow through, barium enema, and IVP. In addition, the Radiology department over-reads all of the images obtained during ERCP’s at MUSC. MUSC has a very active bariatric surgery program, and a large (no pun intended) portion of our barium work involves evaluating the post-operative GI tract. Most of your time on this rotation will be spent learning from either Dr. Nancy Curry or Dr. Stephen Schabel. |
