Breast Imaging
Image of Digital Mamogram

The Breast Imaging Divsion is currently located in Rutledge Tower, an outpatient center located directly across the street from MUSC (and connected by a walkway across Ashley Avenue). In the near future the Breast Imaging Division will move to dedicated space in the the Hollings Cancer Center.

The resident covering Mammography will interpret all screening and diagnostic exams as well as perform all of the breast interventional procedures. The faculty provide excellent teaching and experience in all aspects of Breast Imaging. The volume of studies varies, but typically there are around 40 screening exams, 30 diagnostic exams, 5 ultrasounds, and 3-4 procedures each day.

The attendings provide excellent teaching and allow the residents to actively participate in all aspects of the service (not the case at all institutions). The residents are involved in all of the procedures (under staff supervision), including ultrasound guided biopsies/aspirations, needle localizations, and stereotactic biopsies.

Digital mammography has been added to the state-of-the-art imaging armamentarium of the radiology department which now includes breast ultrasound, breast MR imaging, nuclear medicine imaging and PET, all of which are important in the diagnosis of and therapy for breast diseases. MUSC also has a Multidisciplinary Breast Team composed of breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation therapists, pathologists, radiologists, nurses and other paramedical personnel. All of these members of the group work closely together for the benefit of the individual being treated for any breast disorder.

The members of the Breast Imaging Division are Dr. Thomas Pope, Division Director; Dr. Susan AckermanDr. Abid Irshad, Dr. Amy Campbell, Dr. Abbie Cluver and Dr. Beata Panzegrau.  All members of the Division participate in the many interdisciplinary breast conferences with Surgery, Oncology, and Radiation Oncology.
