Two residents assigned to Pediatric Radiology will split time between two services. The resident covering the reading room is responsible for all of the pediatric plain film, CT, and MRI studies performed. This can be a busy aspect of the service, with between 70-90 studies performed daily. The other resident will perform the pediatric fluoroscopy studies and be responsible for the pediatric ultrasound exams. We have excellent pediatric sonographers, and they will be an important resource in preparing for call. This is a surprisingly busy service, since our pediatricians rely heavily upon ultrasound. Expect between 3-5 fluoroscopy cases and 15-20 ultrasounds per day. MUSC has a nationally recognized children’s hospital, which serves as a large referral center for the southeast. There is also a dedicated children’s ER open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. What does this mean for Pediatric Radiology? It means that you will see a variety of pathology referred from the surrounding areas, and can expect a fairly high volume from the inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services. There are two dedicated pediatric fluoroscopy rooms, one which is a digital fluoroscopy unit upgraded in 2002. Two Acuson Sequoia ultrasound machines are used primarily for pediatric exams. Dr. Jeanne Hill, Dr. Paula Keslar, and Dr. Anil Rao mainly cover the service. Dr. Denise Mulvihill is research faculty.
