MUSC medical center

Letter from the Chairman

Dr. KeaneOn behalf of the faculty and staff in the Department of Urology, welcome to our Web site. Hopefully, as you surf our site, you will find valuable information about our clinical, research and educational programs.

Our department has a long and successful history. As an integral part of the Medical University of South Carolina, the oldest medical schools in the south, we have educated and trained many of the urologists presently practicing in the Southeast.  We have touched tens of thousands of patients’ lives, and helped them through frightening and difficult times.  We also have significantly expanded our clinical research efforts and now offer clinical trails in all areas of genitourinary medicine and surgery.  The recent designation of Hollings Cancer Center as a National Cancer Institute site has further increased our access to innovative and stimulating clinical trials in oncology.   Our basic science research efforts have also expanded considerably with the addition of the Brockmann Endowed Chair of Urologic Oncology which has allowed us to collaborate with the basic scientists at MUSC.  These collaborations have resulted in the development of a number of novel compounds currently undergoing translation into clinical areas.

The Department has seen a very significant expansion of its faculty in particular and its programs in general over the past decade.  Program expansion has included a Bladder & Pelvic Health initiative for both males & females with a highly sought after fellowship program.  This program is multidisciplinary and includes physicians from both Urology and Gynecology Departments.  We have also developed a multi-disciplinary minimally invasive oncology surgical initiative which also includes a fellowship position.  We are the only center in South Carolina offering pediatric urology and andrology services.  We treat pediatric neurogenic and non-nuerogenic voiding dysfunction and also offer major reconstructive surgery in urological congenital birth defects. We are in the process of expanding our stone treatment options, both adult and pediatric, and to include a Nephrology medicine collaboration.

In our clinical areas, we have expanded our satellite office in Mount Pleasant and at that site we now offer state of the art video urodynamic capabilities.  We also have partnered with Clarendon Memorial Hospital and have a growing Urology clinic in Manning, SC. The recent addition of new faculty will greatly enhance our ability to see more patients in more places.  We are working closely with referring physicians in the state and the region to ensure patients get the care they need. We are working continually on many fronts to improve, and yet we know there is still work to do.

Teaching. Healing. Discovering. Our mission continues to guide us as we strive to recruit the best faculty, to provide the best patient care, and to promote basic and translational research. This is true at our two outpatient clinics, the Medical University Hospital, MUSC's Children's Hospital, and the Ralph H. Johnson Veteran's Administration Hospital, where our faculty also practice. Our goal is to be one of the outstanding urology centers both regionally and nationally and we believe that we are well on our way.
